The feeling is familiar, standing on the edge, knowing you should step in … But it is too cold, it puts you out of your comfort zone. You would feel different, uncomfortable, exposed.

I recently met a humble and extremely capable leader, new to post. He had already stepped up but the challenge he was now facing was stepping in, becoming his raw self in a new role. He still felt like a finance person, not a leader! Yet, with a little live reflection he clearly identified his skills, assets and his strong mental attitude to change. He was ready to step in to his new role.

Reflection is key to stepping in. But, let’s be honest – stepping in is the path of most resistance.

Can you think back to a time when you have done it? How did it feel? What did you do? What would you do differently next time?

You are standing there about to make the leap, you can’t quite see where you are going, what will happen and where you may end up.

Can you do it?

Yes, brain science tells us the impact of adrenalin, of serotonin, of how the brain responds in that instant, but how you behave is a complex and it is up to you.

The Behaviour Change Wheel offers a good analysis and food for thought. The principles of behaviour change in the Mindspace approach are also worth a read.

But, when it comes down to it, this is about the pure and simple practice of reflection.

You have stepped in before, you can do it again so devise your own strategy and learn and grow as you go.

What is the worst that could happen?
